Floor stripping and waxing in Laredo: how it works and how often VCT needs it
Strip and wax removes the old finish from a vinyl tile floor and builds up fresh coats. It's periodic work, booked when the space can be closed overnight or over a weekend.
A crew applies a chemical stripper to dissolve the old floor finish, scrubs it off, rinses and dries the floor, and then lays down several thin coats of new finish, letting each one dry before the next. The "wax" today is almost always a polymer floor finish, not actual wax.
How long does it take?
Larger floors can take more than one night. A job around 5,000 square feet can run two to three days, depending on the crew and the condition of the old finish. Furniture has to come off the floor first.
When can people walk on it?
The finish manufacturer sets the dry and cure times on the product label. Ask the provider which product they use and for those times in writing, so you know when to reopen and when heavy carts can roll back in.
A2 How often should VCT floors be stripped and waxed?
There's no fixed calendar. Traffic decides it, along with how much shine regular burnishing still brings back. Many facilities strip once or twice a year and do a lighter scrub and recoat in between.
Signs a strip is due: the finish looks yellow or patchy, dirt is sealed into the coating, or scrubbing and recoating no longer gets the floor back to an even look. Entry areas and main corridors usually wear first.
A3 Strip and wax or scrub and recoat: which do I need?
Scrub and recoat if the finish is worn on top but still intact and fairly clean underneath. Strip and wax if old coats have built up, yellowed, or trapped dirt. A scrub and recoat is the lighter, cheaper job; a full strip resets the floor.

What goes on
One or two fresh coats
A full new build of several coats
When it fits
Finish is dull but intact
Finish is yellowed, built up, or dirty underneath
Time and cost
Shorter and lower
Longer and higher
A4 Can every floor be stripped and waxed?
No. Stripping and refinishing is for resilient and hard floors like vinyl, vinyl composition tile, some ceramic tile, and terrazzo. Carpet doesn't get it, and wood and other sensitive surfaces need their own products and methods.
If you're not sure what's on the floor, tell the provider when you call and ask them to confirm at the walkthrough before quoting.
A5 Does Laredo's heat affect floor finish work?
Floor finish products list temperature and drying instructions on the label, and those are what a crew should follow. Laredo summers are hot: the average high is 99.9°F in July and 100.9°F in August, and about 80 days a year reach 100°F.
Ask whether the building's air conditioning needs to stay on while the finish dries, and whether the provider schedules summer floor work differently. Those climate figures are NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Laredo.
A6 Will the building smell afterward?
It can. Some strippers, particularly older ammonia-based ones, leave a noticeable odor. Ask which product the crew uses and how the space will be ventilated before staff come back.
What to ask before a strip and wax
Is this a full strip or a scrub and recoat, and why?
How many coats of finish, and which product?
What are the dry and cure times on the label, and when can we reopen?
Who moves the furniture, and who puts it back?
How is the area blocked off while floors are wet?
Is sales tax included in the quote?
